Just stumbling. Articles, links, quotes: the Shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

I could not distance or detach myself from the unfolding story of this tragedy yesterday. I was at times sad and at times enraged. I was glued to my computer until about 3 A.M. I realize there are better ways to deal with this sort of thing, but the logical side of me did not get the controls. I tried unsuccessfully to write a coherent piece. What follows are just facts, a quote, and articles. I am now pulling together something to say in church.

In all 19 people were shot at a gathering sponsored by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords yesterday in Tucson.

6 people were killed at the Tuscon shooting:

-John Roll, 63, a federal district court judge.

-Gabriel Zimmerman, 30, Giffords’ director of community outreach

-Dorwin Stoddard, 76, a pastor at Mountain Ave. Church of Christ.

-Christina Greene, 9, a student at Mesa Verde Elementary

-Dorthy Murray, 76

-Phyllis Scheck, 79

What Representtive Giffords said March 25, 2010 when her office was vandalize-an act that was connected with her vote in favor of the Healthcare Bill:

“I think it’s important for all leaders, not just leaders of the Republican Party or the Democratic Party … community leaders, figures in our community to say, ‘Look, we can’t stand for this.’ I mean, this is a situation where people really need to realize that this rhetoric, and firing people up, and even things … For example, we’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list, but the way she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. And when people do that, they’ve gotta realize that there’s consequences to that action.” Congresswoman Giffords’ full statement following the March 2010 vandalism of her office: StudentActivism.net
