Wisconsin Republican reveals he made-up story of his own assault

I’m trying to write this as a less inflammatory post since the story so aptly informs you what kind of Republicans exist in Wisconsin. But I just have to comment:  These scumbags drive away better people from politics – better Republicans, better Democratics, Independents- you name ’em.  Not everybody can contend with this kind of lowlife drama.

I learned from Joe Tarr of Isthmus today that the Republican campaign worker Kyle Wood told the truth after first fabricating a story about an assault on his person that never happened.

GOP campaigner for Chad Lee, Kyle Wood, alleged that he was beaten at his home and was briefly choked with a ligature on October 24th.  He then told The Daily Caller and a Milwaukee blog that the attack was politically motivated. Today he recanted his story when Madison police detectives questioned him.

Lee is running against Mark Pocan for Tammy Baldwin’s U.S. House seat in the 2nd congressional district (and has not a snowball’s chance in hell of winning).

Madison police updated its incident report concerning the alleged incident this afternoon.

Here’s an update added to the Madison police report on the fabricated incident today to reflect the new information:

MON 10/29/12 @ 4:50 p.m.

In an interview this afternoon with Madison Police detectives, the victim in this case recanted his earlier statements in regards to this crime. This crime, alleged to have occurred on High Street in the South Police District, will be cleared as “Unfounded” for case reporting purposes. Once follow up investigation is completed, MPD’s case file will be reviewed with Dane County District Attorney’s Office.

Joe Tarr of Isthmus interviewed Captain Joe Balles, commander of the South District, Madison Police to confirm the update.

Wood apparently concocted the stunt to paint his state and his opposition in a bad light.  Wood was asked why he was attacked by a conservative M.J. Sentinel blogger, for the October 28th piece, “Beaten for being a gay Republican? An interview with Kyle Wood”.

Wood replied,
“It probably had something to do with the fact that I support a Republican candidate running against an openly gay man,” he told Christian Schneider of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I think there’s just so much animosity at this point, people have just stopped being reasonable,”

Here’s another selection from the same piece which shows Wood’s flare for the dramatic:
“You’re laying there in a hospital with a brace on your neck – I had lost a lot of motor control on the right side of my body – and so they thought I must have done something to my neck. And everyone keeps coming over and looking at the ligature marks and saying ‘oooh, gosh!’ And ‘ewwww.’” When someone began swabbing his neck, that’s when it got a little more “real,” as suddenly, his body itself was a crime scene. “It was like an episode of C.S.I.” he said.
Read on at Schneider’s The Yankee Review at Milwaukee Journal Sentinel so you can enjoy the tale in full.

Wood had also earlier alleged that he received harassing text messages from Mark Pocan’s partner.
Those were also fabricated by Wood.

Isthmus quotes Captain Balles as saying, “Those did not occur. I’m not going to get into the specifics of how we know that.”

This is what Media Trackers, often called “Media TraKKKers” by other bloggers, still has on its blog regarding the incident today:

Allegations Fly in Beating of Gay GOP Volunteer

A gay Republican volunteer beaten last week in Madison by an unidentified individual is alleging that prior to the attack he received harassment from other gays, including the husband of Democratic congressional candidate Mark Pocan. The alleged harasser, Philip Frank, denies the allegations and denies knowing the victim, Kyle Wood.

Media Trackers is continuing to follow developments in this story, but due to the ongoing criminal investigation we have chosen to remove the allegations raised by both sides from our website. All information has been given to law enforcement authorities. As information becomes available, we will stay abreast of the case.

Isthmus says that originally a longer piece was at M.Trackers on the matter of the texts Woods lied about.  The longer piece had the headline, “Mark Pocan’s Husband Told Beaten GOP Operative ‘You’re A Marked Man,’ Threatened and Harassed Via Text Message”
