Backasswards mine events in Wisconsin and a great video from Paul DeMain

The dates on these events look a little bassackward. Or backasswards. Maybe even assbackwards.
If you can trust the word of Scott Fitz (insert your own joke here) whatever the legislature does on the mine isn’t over ’til March:
“Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has said that he doesn’t envision final passage until mid-March, and then with significant changes.”

Well, as long as I have you gathered here today, why don’t I also share this excellent video of Paul DeMain of IndianCountryTV interviewing Bad River Tribal Chairman Mike Wiggins, Matt Dannenberg of Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, and Frank Koehn of Save the Water’s Edge as they stand outside the hearing on the open pit mine held last week.

As you go through this 17 or so minutes of footage you’ll also see protesters taking the mic and holding glowing letters in a snow storm at an evening protest outside the Capitol building. It’s so blustery, at times people nearly get the signs they’re holding whipped out of their hands by wind. It’s a small-ish gathering, but given the fierce weather, it’s a wonder that those people were holding out – a testimony to how much people care about this issue. In the video, Matt Dannenberg says that approximately 600 people registered an opinion on the mines by paper slip during the hearing. He estimated that 70-80% of those 600 individuals registered opposition to the proposed mine bills.
