The Iron Lady is Dead

Point of clarification:
Cher is not dead. (Thank goodness!)
There has been some confusion with the emergence of the hashtag #nowthatchersdead on twitter.
That hashtag seems to have originated from the web page “Is Thatcher Dead Yet?”

—————————————

Tonight I shall toast to the demise of the Iron Lady.

If you instead shed a tear, you’ll be joining Scott Walker and friends – you know – the folks who admire union-busters. See Enemies within: Thatcher and the unions

You could find tearful company with Ron Johnson. (Err… umm…assuming the man called “Our Dumb Senator” even knows that she existed.):
Famous quote from Maggie, here: “They’re casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations, because there is no such thing as an entitlement unless someone has first met an obligation”Transcript

Perhaps the sobbing will find a shoulder to lean on with Wisconsin’s former Republican governor of 16 years Tommy Thompson who I imagine has already completed his extra dozen push-ups in Maggie’s memory this morning. He’ll be hoisting his cold beer tonight by 11AM with a toast to her moxie for followed through with something akin to the flat tax. Her scheme was called a “poll tax” or “community charge”.

And ALL of Wisconsin’s cunning conservatives HAVE to admire her stealth!

I’m reading the 1987 Conservative Party manifesto – which supposedly she campaigned on and would have warned people of the tax scheme. Hmmm.

Not so sure of how plain that was – but I DO see a lot to remind me of the Tea Party tripe of today.
Try this on for size:
“There is a strong moral case for reducing taxation. High taxes deprive people of their independence and make their choices for them. The desire to do better for one’s family is one of the strongest motives in human nature. As a party committed to the family and opposed to the over-powerful State, we want people to keep more of what they earn, and to have more freedom of choice about what they do for themselves, their families and for others less fortunate.”

A bit of unrest ensued back then (The worst occurred 3/31/90 — see video of 100’s of thousands of people in the streets of London below) as everyone realized the full implications of the tax switcheroo and that was the end of Margaret’s career.

Part 2 of Battle of Trafalgar

Part 3 of Battle of Trafalgar

Wow. I can not imagine what it would be like for hundreds of thousands of people to assemble in protests AND have some change in policy or in leadership come as a result.

If there is one nice thing I can say for Margaret Thatcher at this time, it is this: she did see the writing on the wall and did have sanity enough to resign in November of the same year. (Unlike certain governors with Napoleon complexes that we know of.)

Update: Elvis Costello also wrote a song about Margaret Thatcher’s death.
Lyrics.

For tonight:

dark beer

THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES[a party song]

WHEN MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THERE WILL BE NO TEARS
SAVE YOUR SORROW FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SHE STOMPED FOR YEARS
SHE TORTURED NORTH OF WATFORD WITH A VICIOUS HATE
SO WHEN MARGARET THATCHER DIES
LET’S CELEBRATE
and i say

HEY HO
HERE WE GO
TELL EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
SHE’S GONE!
COLOUR ME WITH LOVE
BUILD A BONFIRE
PAINT THE SKY
COME ON DOWN
I’LL TELL YOU WHY.
SHE’S GONE!
AND NOBODY CRIES…

THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES

YOU WANNA GIVE HER A STATE FUNERAL?
WELL THAT’S JUST GREAT.
IRONIC,COS SHE LEFT US IN A SORRY STATE
I PROTEST!
IT’S MONEY WASTED
BUILD A SCHOOL INSTEAD
THE ONLY REASON THAT I’LL GO IS TO MAKE SURE SHE’S DEAD…

HEY HO
HERE WE GO
TELL EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
SHE’S GONE!
COLOUR ME WITH LOVE
BUILD A BONFIRE
PAINT THE SKY
COME ON DOWN
I’LL TELL YOU WHY.
SHE’S GONE!
AND NOBODY CRIES…

THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES

IF YOU SAY MONEY’S ALL THAT MATTERS
THEN YOU’LL PAY A PRICE
DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU DO
YOU’LL KILL TO GET A SLICE
COS THE WICKED WITCH OF WESTMINSTER
LEFT AN EVIL CURSE.
NOW IT’S DOWN TO THATCHER’S CHILDREN
AND IT’S GETTING WORSE!

HEY HO
HERE WE GO
TELL EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
SHE’S GONE!
COLOUR ME WITH LOVE

BUILD A BONFIRE
PAINT THE SKY
COME ON DOWN
I’LL TELL YOU WHY.
SHE’S GONE!
AND NOBODY CRIES…

THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES

SO DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE DIE,
DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE DIE

YEAH DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE DIE
DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE,DIE DIE

THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES…
