NBC to air one-hour documentary on climate change Sunday April 6

Somebody please pinch me.

It appears that a major TV network is taking global climate change seriously.

This NBC special airs on Sunday at 6PM Central Time.

Here’s what NBC says about its doc:
Our Year of Extremes: Did Climate Change Just Hit Home?
In a special one-hour documentary, NBC’s Ann Curry travels from the Arctic, to drought-stricken regions in the American West, to the edge of rising seas in Florida and into extreme weather events all over the globe. “Our Year of Extremes: Did Climate Change Just Hit Home?” airs Sunday, April 6 at 7pm/6c on NBC.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this documentary

Emphasis on “cautiously”.

I don’t watch NBC but Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) does. This is an incomplete list of NBC fail as seen by FAIR in 2013:

  • FAIR slammed NBC’s White House correspondent Chuck Todd for defending acts of stenography journalism on Obamacare: “During a segment on “Morning Joe,” former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) speculated that most opponents of the Affordable Care Act have been fed erroneous information about the law. Todd said that Republicans “have successfully messaged against it” but he disagrees with those who argue that the media should educate the public on the law. According to Todd, that’s President Barack Obama’s job.”
  • FAIR caught Brian Williams and the TODAY show advertising for General Mills foods and Dyson vacuums.
  • FAIR noted that NBC News has repeatedly made news out of non-news on Iran’s non-existent nuclear weapons.
  • FAIR noted that the NBC Nightly News reported that video of killings released by Chelsea Manning (formerly known as “Bradley Manning”) showed the killing of “a number of insurgents and two innocent civilians”. But in truth, the insurgents were not insurgents, they were innocent locals. FAIR says that what NBC reported was the military’s cover story – a story that was shown to be false upon the release of the video. FAIR also notes the hypocrisy of an NBC News report that calls Bradley Manning “the man who may have put U.S. military secrets in the hands of Osama bin Laden”.: “…giving classified information to the public is something that news outlets–including NBC News–routinely do, and each time they do it they too could be accused of “aiding the enemy.” For example, NBC’s Michael Isikoff reported on February 4 that a “confidential memo” produced by the Justice Department held that “the U.S. government can order the killing of American citizens if they are believed to be ‘senior operational leaders’ of Al-Qaeda or ‘an associated force’–even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S.”

A Note On NBC Ownership

For your information, NBC is owned by mega media outlet Comcast and Comcast is getting MUCH bigger due to a merger with Time Warner.

A majority of NBCUniversal stock was transferred to Comcast as of 2011. That buy made Comcast the largest cable company and residential internet service provider as well as one of the world’s most powerful producers of TV shows and films. – source

And now Comcast is appealing to the FCC and the DOJ to allow it to acquire Time Warner Cable for $45 billion. The merger is expected to be approved under conditions that provide additional “back door” regulations.

From JOLT Digest:
“For roughly 80% of Americans, the only available option for high-speed Internet access is their local cable monopoly. Comcast, which uses traditional wire cables, only faces head to head competition from Verizon FiOS, which uses fiber optics. In 2010, Verizon announced that it was not planning to lay any new fiber to expand its market. If the Comcast-Time Warner merger is approved, Comcast alone will control about half of the nation’s TV, phone, and Internet bundle services.”

  1. They broke up “Ma-Bell” for being too big and having a monopoly on telephone service so why are they allowing Comcast which has a rotten reputation have such a monopoly on American media and communications! WTH.
